How to pick the purr-fect pet-friendly condominium on Maui

Up until recently, moving to Hawai’i with a pet was difficult and time consuming because of the state’s quarantine laws. But living with one never has to be — even if you’re in a small space like a condominium.

As long as you’re careful to sniff out the amenities and rules surrounding pets at your condominium, you’ll be able to feel right at home with your furry friends. First, you’ll want to do some research. Some communities may say they’re pet friendly, but instead impose restrictions that make it infeasible for pet owners to live there comfortably. Before you rent or buy, check into whether a condominium community has breed restrictions, weight limits or caps on the number of pets allowed per unit. Ask where pets are allowed to be on property because they may be banned in some areas.

But ideally, you want to live in a complex that’s actually friendly and welcoming toward pets — not just the bare minimum. Is there a dog-friendly beach, walking trail or park nearby? How close is the nearest off-leash area? These are all things you should consider.

You’ll also want to take some steps to make sure you and your pet are comfortable in a small space — especially if your pet has lots of fur. Upon moving in, invest in an air purifier, which can help clear the air of pet dander that can trigger asthma or allergies. And when it comes time for household cleaning, buy cleaning solutions that are nontoxic and friendly toward your pets — as well as the environment.
