10 Facts You Might Not Know About Maui Golf Told By Rob Shelton

Golfing on Maui is one of the most intimate island experiences where you can uncover hidden island gems and memories to last a lifetime. With so much to unpack about golfing on Maui we thought we’d share some of our favorite nuggets of information. Island Sotheby’s International Realty’s, Rob Shelton R(B), shares his top 10 favorite facts about golfing on Maui below!

  1. Maui Country Club was founded in 1925 and is Maui's oldest golf course in operation. Amenities include a 9-hole regulation par 36 course, tennis courts with dedicated pickleball courts, swimming pool, and direct access to Spreckelsville's "Baby Beach", a clubhouse and pro shop.

  2. The Waiehu Course opened in 1945 and overlooks the Waihe'e reef just offshore. The sixth, seventh and eighth holes play along the white sand beach near Waiehu Beach Park.

  3. The Kaanapali Royal Course hosted the 1964 Canada Cup December 3-6. It featured 34 two-person teams from around the world. Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer won the event at 22 under par over the Argentinian team of Roberto De Vicenzo and Leopoldo Ruiz. This event later became known as the World Cup in 1967.

  4. The Kapalua Bay Course was the first in the U.S. to receive a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary distinction (1993). It was the first of three courses developed at Kapalua, with two remaining, following the closure of The Village Course in 2007.

  5. The Kapalua Plantation Course has been recognized as the best golf course in Hawaii for 15 consecutive years by Golfweek. In addition, it is home to the annual PGA Tour Sentry Tournament of Champions.

  6. The Dunes at Maui Lani and the Pukalani Country Club (semi-private) have Maui's only nightly lit driving ranges.

  7. Wailea features three golf courses, The Blue, Gold, and Emerald Courses. The Emerald course was awarded the Top Fairways Award by Golf for Women Magazine seven times. In addition, Wailea's Gold course hosted the Wendy's Champions Skins Game from 2001-2007.

  8. Golf Digest called The King Kamehameha Club's clubhouse "the Guggenheim of clubhouses." It was designed by one of America's most famous architects, Frank Lloyd Wright.

  9. GolfAdvisor.com rated Maui Nui Golf Club in Kihei as a top 20 course in 2016 and 2017.

  10. For a special treat, take Expeditions to Lanai and experience the Four Seasons Resort Lanai and the Jack Nicklaus signature course, The Challenge at Manele. The experience at Koele has closed and is now the Adventure Center, with zip lines installed throughout the back nine.
