Kim McDonald

Kim McDonald has been described as someone who "eats, sleeps, and breathes Maui, and then somehow magically translates her experience into art." This couldn't be more true of her and the work she creates. Kim rejoices in the rich splendor and thrill of the island, both as a keen observer, artist and passionate local. Whether she's paddleboarding, snorkeling, surfing, or hiking through Maui's magnificent waterfalls, she has a front-row seat to it all. This all comes to life in the vibrant and colorful world she creates in every art piece.

That may be why her work has such a strong emotional resonance. Kim has spent years exploring how to bring life to the way she sees Maui, through light and shadows, sumptuous hues, the symphony of the ocean waves, and the way Maui is a world of its own.

Her signature is marquetry, a specific craft that uses tiny pieces of wood to create detailed imagery. First, she creates works that depict native Hawaiian birds, flowers, and sea life. Then, inspired by the land around her, she adds a distinct embellishment using exotic woods such as koa, mango, wenge, walnut, and mahogany.

She is a trailblazing self-taught artist whose art reflects her years riding the Hawaiian waves and immersed in her rich and beautiful culture. Conscious art connoisseurs value her pieces throughout the world. Each piece contains genuine depth and is created to pave the way for generations to come.
