Last month, more than 300 paddlers took to the seas to raise money for breast cancer research and community resources as part of the Paddle for Life, an event supported for years by Island Sotheby’s International Realty’s longtime Lana’i agent, Greg Sturm R(S).

“It was Breast Cancer Awareness Month so a bunch of crews paddle from Maui to Lana’i and everyone sponsors paddlers with donations,” Sturm explained.

Sturm helped sponsor a team of paddlers from Lana’i, whose team ended up raising more than $6,000. That team joined more than 300 other paddlers, who altogether raised a whopping $224,654 to support breast cancer research and services for Maui families who are touched by cancer.

The event marked the 11th year that Paddle for Life put on the “Voyage to Lana’i,” a 34-mile roundtrip journey that starts at Canoe Beach in Lahaina, Maui and travels to Hulopo’e Bay, Lana’i. The event is organized each year by the Pacific Cancer Foundation, which focuses on providing free support services for Maui's cancer community.

“The whole town was full with everybody,” Sturm said of Lana’i on race day.

After the race, hundreds of breast cancer survivors and the paddlers raising awareness for them poured into Lana'i for a BBQ on the beach at Manele Bay.

Home to just more than 3,000 residents, Lana’i is a tight-knit community where everyone supports each other, Sturm said. Besides supporting the Paddle for Life each year, he also is an avid support of the Lana’i Association of Performing Arts, which gives the island’s youth the opportunity to perform on stage at plays throughout the years.

Then there’s also the Rotary Club that Sturm is involved in, which awards $5,000 in scholarships each year. But their most adorable act of service each year is delivering a hand-inscribed dictionary to every child in third grade, Sturm said.
