Living on Maui means days off work are spent lounging on the beach and exploring the island’s forests and valleys by hiking trails. But whether you’re kama’aina or are vacationing here, there is one thing that can make your Maui adventures even better — exploring the island with a shelter dog by your side.
The Maui Humane Society allows visitors and residents to take adoptable dogs out for a day of fun through its “Beach Buddies” program. Every Wednesday and Friday, head down to the humane society to pick up your furry companion so you can splash around at the beach, grab lunch at a dog-friendly restaurant or explore the island’s numerous hiking trails. The dogs are sure to be thrilled with a day of one-on-one attention and adventure, while they shine in front of potential adopters who might see them cruising around the island.
The outings need to be arranged in advance, which you can do by visiting the humane society’s website. Once scheduled, you’ll head to the humane society that morning to pick up your beach buddy. The staff will pair you with a dog based on your activity level and experience.
Before setting out, you’ll be provided with a backpack of all the supplies your pup might need on the adventure, including a water bottle, bowl, towel, treats, poop bags and a seatbelt.
The program is first come, first serve, so be sure to check the humane society’s website on the first of the month when it releases the calendar. There are five spots on each day, plus five waitlist spots.
There’s no charge, but a $25 donation is suggested to help keep the program going. And for beach buddies’ biggest fans, the humane society offers a 10 percent discount on the program’s t-shirts, tanks and stickers.
