From Beach Cleanups to Food Drives: Giving Back in Kihei & Wailea

South Maui is often experienced through its beaches, sunshine, and easygoing coastal lifestyle…but theres another side to being here thats just as meaningful. Across Kihei and Wailea, there are countless ways to connect more deeply with the island through mālama, caring for the land, the ocean, and the community that makes this place home.

For residents and visitors alike, giving back isnt separate from the Maui experience; its part of it. Whether youre here for a week or a lifetime, there are meaningful ways to step in, connect, and contribute. Below are a few ways to get involved across Kihei and Wailea, with exactly how to start.

Aloha Backpack Buddies (Maui Food Bank)

Supporting local families often begins with something simple: access to food. The Aloha Backpack Buddies is one of Fairmont Kea Lanis longest-standing volunteer opportunities and is a program that provides Maui schoolchildren with backpacks filled with nutritious, easy-to-prepare meals to take home over the weekend. These meals help bridge the gap for keiki who rely on school food programs during the week. While this isnt a beachside volunteer experience, the impact is immediate and deeply personal. Contributions support food packing, coordination, and distribution, ensuring children have consistent access to meals at home.

How to get involved:

Donate online directly through Maui Food Bank

Volunteer at Maui Food Bank sorting and packing events

Organize a small group or workplace donation drive

Why it matters:Its one of the most direct ways to support Maui families, quiet, essential, and deeply impactful.

Rooted in Aloha (Reforestation Initiative)

Rooted in Aloha, a reforestation initiative created by Fairmont Kea Lani in partnership with Skyline Conservation and supported by Nā Koa Manu Conservation, invites both residents and visitors to play a direct role in restoring Mauis native forests on the slopes of Haleakalā. While some conservation efforts are hands-on, Rooted in Aloha offers a different kind of connection, one rooted in long-term impact. Through your contribution, native trees like koa, sandalwood, and ʻōhiʻa are planted in carefully restored areas, alongside supporting species such as māmaki, maile, and hala pepe to encourage biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Its the kind of experience where even if youre not physically planting the tree yourself, you know exactly where your impact lives, on the slopes of Haleakalā, growing over time.

How to get involved:

Donate when booking a stay at Fairmont Kea Lani or directly through their front desk

Contribute online through the Rooted in Aloha program

Choose a giving level:

Sponsor a Tree ($30): Supports propagation, planting, and long-term care of one native tree

Sponsor a Grove ($500): Supports the planting and care of ~17 canopy trees

Sponsor an Acre ($5,000): Helps fund conservation fencing to protect native habitat

Why it matters:

Each contribution helps restore Mauis watershed, protect endangered forest birds and insects, and rebuild ecosystems that have been impacted over time. Its a simple, accessible way to give back, whether youre visiting for a few days or calling Maui home. In a place where the landscape shapes everything, supporting its restoration is one of the most meaningful ways to stay connected long after your visit ends.

Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund (South Maui Conservation)

South Mauis coastline is one of the most active areas for hands-on conservation. Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund offers several ways to engage, depending on your time and interest.

Turtle Fence Repair & Dune Restoration

Volunteer days take place along coastal areas like Kealīa Pond. Youll help repair protective fencing for nesting turtles, remove invasive plants, and restore sand dunes that act as critical habitat. Expect a few hours outdoors, working alongside a small group, with guidance from conservation staff.

How to get involved:

Register for volunteer days through Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund

Sign up in advance (spaces can be limited)

Bring water, sun protection, and closed-toe shoes

Why it matters:Healthy dunes and protected nesting areas are essential to the survival of native marine species.

Hawksbill Recovery: Nest Watch

One of the most unique volunteer experiences on Maui. Nest watch involves overnight observation of nesting areas during hawksbill turtle season. You may spend hours under the stars, listening to the ocean, waiting quietly. Its slow, patient, and deeply peaceful.

How to get involved:

Apply through Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund

Complete required training or orientation

Be available for late-night or overnight shifts

Why it matters:Hawksbill turtles are critically endangered. Monitoring nests helps protect them and improve hatchling survival rates.

Hawksbill Turtle Recovery: Dawn & Night Patrols

Volunteers walk designated beaches at sunrise or after sunset, looking for turtle tracks, nests, or hatchling activity. Some mornings are quiet. Others offer rare moments of discovery and documentation.

How to get involved:

Sign up for patrol shifts

Attend orientation if required

Commit to a specific time window

Why it matters:These patrols are essential for tracking and protecting nesting activity in real time.

Maui Fishpond Association (Kō‘ie‘ie Fishpond)

In North Kihei, giving back connects directly to Hawaiian culture and history. The Maui Fishpond Association is dedicated to revitalizing Kō‘ie‘ie Fishpond, an ancient Hawaiian aquaculture system that once sustained entire communities. Workdays are hands-on and collaborative. Volunteers enter shallow ocean water, walking carefully across uneven, rocky surfaces to collect and pass stones. Together, groups rebuild sections of the fishpond wall, lifting, placing, and aligning rocks with intention.

The pace is steady and communal. Theres often storytelling, cultural context, and a strong sense of connection among participants. As the Hawaiian proverb says: “ʻAʻohe hana nui ke alu ʻia”—no task is too big when done together.

How to get involved:

Register for community workdays (typically scheduled in advance)

Be prepared to lift 20+ pounds and work in shallow ocean conditions

Volunteers must generally be 14+ and physically able to navigate uneven terrain

Saturday community workdays (like 911 a.m.) focus on rebuilding sections of the wall by hand.

Why it matters:This is cultural preservation in action, supporting traditional Hawaiian practices while strengthening community connection.

Redline Rafting: DIY Mālama Hawaiʻi

Giving back can also be spontaneous, flexible, and built into your day. Redline Rafting has created a simple, accessible way for both visitors and residents to participate in mālama Hawaiʻi through self-guided cleanup efforts. Start your morning at the Kihei Boat Ramp, grab a reusable tote and trash grabber, and head out. Maybe its a beach walk, a park visit, or even along the roadside. Wherever you go, youre actively caring for the island. Once your bag is full, snap a photo, return the tools, and youre done.

How to get involved:

Stop by the Kihei Boat Ramp (2800 S. Kihei Road) between 6 a.m. 12 p.m.

Look for gray trucks labeled “Mālama Hawaiʻi”

Grab a tote bag and trash grabber (DIY, no sign-up needed)

Clean up any area you choose

Return supplies to the truck when finished

Bonus:

Tag @redlinerafting with malamahawaii

Receive 5 off snorkeling tours + potential hotel perks

Why it matters:It removes the barrier to entry. Anyone can participate, anytime, and every bag collected makes a difference.

Giving back in Kihei and Wailea isnt about adding something extra to your itinerary; its about experiencing Maui more fully. Its the early morning beach cleanup before coffee. The quiet rhythm of rebuilding a fishpond wall. The stillness of watching the shoreline at night. Because here, the most meaningful way to experience Maui isnt just to enjoy it, its to care for it.

Bringing Upcountry Home: Local Art, Makers, and Spring Inspiration from Maui

<img src=https://www.islandsothebysrealty.com/uploads/agent-105/2026 Blog Assets/Bringing Upcountry Home: Local Art, Makers, and Spring Inspiration from Maui/Screenshot 2026-03-06 at 1.17.45 PM.png alt= width=937 height=479 />

Spring on Maui does not arrive all at once. It moves gently — through quiet roads, into historic storefronts, across neighborhoods, and out over rolling pastures. The mornings feel a little brighter. The air shifts. Something about the season invites a second look at the spaces we live in.

Life at home follows its own rhythm. We are drawn to space, to light, to the views outside our windows and the details within our walls. Spring is when many homeowners begin to shift their spaces. Windows stay open longer. Outdoor living areas are refreshed. And inside, rooms are reimagined with small but meaningful changes. One of the most powerful and personal ways to refresh a home this season is through art.

Upcountry has long been a creative hub — artists drawn to its quiet elevation, agricultural heritage, and distinctive light. That spirit finds its way into galleries, studios, and everyday life across the region.

A hand-blown glass piece can reflect the shifting light of an Upcountry afternoon. A watercolor of native flora can soften a hallway or entry with color and movement. Its about choosing something intentional.

From Valley Runs to Downwind Races: March in Motion on Maui

Infinity Pool Dreams: Resort Style Outdoor Living on Maui

While much of the country is layering up, Mauis version of the season is defined by golden light, gentle trade winds, and days that naturally unfold outdoors. Morning coffee on the lanai. Afternoons by the pool. Evenings that end with a sunset and the soft sound of the ocean. Homes designed around infinity edge pools embody that rhythm. They frame the horizon, extend the living space outward, and create a feeling that blends comfort with resort style ease.

These three exceptional properties offer distinct interpretations of that lifestyle, each capturing a unique expression of island living. Different settings, unique architecture, but all connected by a shared experience: elevated indoor outdoor living anchored by views, privacy, and a pool that feels like it flows straight into the Pacific.

Set across 52.775 acres, 454 Wailau Place is a private Maui retreat where the infinity edge pool melts seamlessly into the ocean beyond. Nearly 2,000 square feet of covered lanais create a true outdoor living room, with space to gather, dine, and relax while taking in panoramic views of the West Maui Mountains and the coastline.

In the winter months, the vantage point becomes even more special, with seasonal whale watching visible right from your own lanai. This is a home designed for those who value both craftsmanship and space. From koa wood details to Venetian plaster walls and a La Cornue range in the kitchen, every element is thoughtfully curated. Expansive acreage, flourishing fruit orchards, and a fully integrated solar system define this estate, offering luxury along with a sense of permanence and self-sufficiency that is increasingly rare.

At 27 Kaulele Place, modern design meets the best of West Mauis coastal lifestyle. Located in Lanikeha at the Kaanapali Golf Estates, this newly built single-level home is thoughtfully positioned to capture sweeping views of the Pacific, Molokai, and Lanai, where sunsets unfold as a nightly spectacle. On Mauis North Shore, the feeling of resort living takes on a more tropical, grounded tone. At 20 Kapuaimilia Place, a gated 2 acre estate in Haiku, the infinity pool and spa are set within a landscape of mature palms, fruit trees, and vibrant greenery, creating a private sanctuary that feels both expansive and intimate.

The homes design emphasizes flow and connection to the outdoors, with bright, open living spaces that lead directly to the pool and garden areas. A separate ohana adds flexibility for guests, extended family, or rental potential, while features like a photovoltaic system with Powerwalls support a lifestyle that is both comfortable and mindful.

What connects these homes is more than the shimmer of an infinity pool spilling toward the horizon. Each residence is shaped around the rhythms of the island — light shifting across the water, trade winds moving through open rooms, the quiet line where indoors dissolves into landscape. Views stretch wide, privacy feels natural, and the architecture invites the outside in, creating an ease that lingers like an endless season of retreat.

Food as Culture in West Maui: Where Gathering, Memory, and Community Meet

<img src=https://www.islandsothebysrealty.com/uploads/agent-105/2026 Blog Assets/Food as Culture in West Maui: Where Culture and Community Meet/download.jpeg alt= width=1311 height=872 />

In West Maui, food has always carried meaning beyond what is on the plate. It is how stories are told without needing to be written down. How generations stay connected. How neighbors check in on one another. A shared table here is rarely rushed and almost never just about eating.

In Lahaina especially, food has long been one of the towns quiet anchors. Restaurants are places where locals mark milestones, where fishermen drop off the days catch, where chefs know their farmers by name, and where visitors are welcomed into something that feels personal rather than polished. To dine in Lahaina is to experience the towns rhythm, its warmth, and its generosity.

This February, the Lahaina Food and Wine Festival returns from February 18 through 22, 2026, offering more than a lineup of tastings and dinners. It is an invitation to gather again. To support the people behind the kitchens. And to celebrate a community that continues to move forward with care, intention, and pride.

<img src=https://www.islandsothebysrealty.com/uploads/agent-105/2026 Blog Assets/Food as Culture in West Maui: Where Culture and Community Meet/AdobeStock_1807600795.jpeg alt= width=1311 height=875 />

Why Food Matters Here

Across Hawaiʻi, food has always been communal. It shows up at celebrations, at funerals, at long tables under tents, and in kitchens where everyone is welcome to help. In Lahaina, that sense of togetherness has never disappeared, even during the most difficult chapters.

Following the 2023 wildfires, Lahaina experienced profound loss. Homes, businesses, cultural sites, and lives were forever changed. Yet what has remained constant is the spirit of the people. Food, in its quiet and familiar way, has been part of that resilience. Cooking for one another. Reopening doors when ready. Finding ways to reconnect.

Now in its second year, the Lahaina Food and Wine Festival was created to celebrate the people behind Lahainas culinary scene and to bring the community together in a way that feels genuine. Spanning five days, the festival brings together chefs, sommeliers, winemakers, farmers, fishermen, and hospitality professionals who have helped shape Lahaina into a place known for thoughtful, soulful dining. Hosted at beloved locations including Māla Ocean Tavern, Coco Deck, Sale Pepe, and the Lahaina Jodo Mission, the festival blends elevated experiences with gatherings that feel accessible and welcoming. Each event reflects a respect for ingredients, craft, and the relationships that sustain West Mauis food culture.

As festival organizer and Māla Ocean Tavern owner Caleb Hopkins has shared, the intention has always been connection first. The 2026 festival expands on that foundation while staying rooted in what makes Lahaina special. Quality. Care. And a deep respect for the people who make it all possible.

The festival opens on Wednesday, February 18 with a Champagne and Caviar Kick Off Party at Coco Deck, a relaxed, celebratory start featuring Champagne Collet and thoughtfully prepared pūpū. From there, the week unfolds at a pace that feels intentional rather than overwhelming.

Sale Pepe hosts Tre Tavolate dItalia, a three night journey through Italys regional cuisines, from the volcanic flavors of Sicily to the comforting traditions of Tuscany. These dinners are designed to be immersive and unhurried, the kind of evenings where conversation lingers well past the final course.

At Māla Ocean Tavern, the Kaena Winery Tasting Dinner pairs Grenache focused wines with a custom menu, while the Kiawe Outdoor Experience at West Maui Gardens in Launiupoko brings guests outdoors for a farm to table evening cooked over kiawe wood with sweeping ocean views. A portion of proceeds from this event supports the Maui Pono Foundation, reinforcing the festivals commitment to giving back to the community it celebrates.

Family and community remain central to the festival. A free keiki cooking class invites young chefs to explore the kitchen with curiosity and confidence.

The Grand Taste Event at Lahaina Jodo Mission brings together chefs and wine professionals for a walk around tasting that benefits local organizations.

The weekend concludes with Bubbles, Beats and Brunch at Coco Deck, an easygoing close filled with good food, music, and familiar faces.

<img src=https://www.islandsothebysrealty.com/uploads/agent-105/2026 Blog Assets/Food as Culture in West Maui: Where Culture and Community Meet/AdobeStock_1735881453.jpeg alt= width=1311 height=874 />

The Lahaina Food and Wine Festival is not about spectacle. It is about showing up. About sharing a meal. About recognizing the people who continue to cook, create, and care for this town. In West Maui, food remains one of the most powerful ways to come together. This February, Lahaina invites residents and visitors alike to gather with intention, to support with heart, and to experience the island through the simple, meaningful act of sharing a table.

For festival details, tickets, and additional information, visit lahainafoodandwine.com.

Overall, the most meaningful way to support Mauis recovery is through mindful visitation. Mauis economy relies on visitors, and many restaurants, shops, and experiences in Lahaina and across West Maui are open and welcoming guests. Visitors are encouraged to arrive with aloha, compassion, and respect. Support local businesses. Learn about Lahainas history. Participate in volunteer opportunities when possible. While some fire affected areas remain closed, honoring those boundaries and avoiding photography of impacted sites is an important expression of care. Resources such as mauinuifirst.com offer thoughtful guidance for supporting Maui responsibly.

Hidden South Maui: Cultural Landmarks That Shape the Coast

<img src=https://www.islandsothebysrealty.com/uploads/agent-105/2026 Blog Assets/Hidden South Maui: Cultural Landmarks That Shape the Coast/AdobeStock_416188510.jpeg alt= width=1092 height=705 />

South Maui is often introduced through its sparkling beaches, sunset dinners, and resort pools, yet there is a deeper story woven into this coast. Ancient fishpond walls still catch the light at low tide. Lava flows remember the islands most recent eruptions. Whales, turtles, and native birds return season after season, following paths that have existed long before any shoreline condos or beach paths.

This guide highlights some of South Mauis lesser known cultural and natural landmarks, along with insight into why this coastline continues to captivate those seeking serenity and scenery.

Makena Landing and Turtle Town

Today, Makena Landing is known as a launch point for kayakers, snorkelers, and divers who head toward Nahuna Point and the famous Turtle Town, where underwater lava arches shelter coral and abundant marine life. Endangered green sea turtles rest beneath rocky ledges, colorful reef fish move through the arches, and on special days manta rays or even a Hawaiian monk seal may glide by.

Long before it became a snorkel stop, this coastline was home to small Hawaiian villages connected by Piʻilanis famed Kings Highway, a foot trail that once encircled the island. In the 1800s, Makena Landing served as a busy port, shipping produce, sugar, cotton, and cattle between islands and to the mainland. When Kahului Harbor took over as Mauis commercial hub, Makena grew quiet again, known mainly to fishermen and kiawe harvesters.

Spending time here today is a reminder that South Maui has always been shaped by the ocean. If you visit, go with care. Give turtles space, avoid standing on coral, and move slowly in the water. It is one of the most beautiful places to see marine life, and it is also a living ecosystem that depends on gentle visitors.

Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Sanctuary Visitor Center

Each winter, thousands of kohola, the North Pacific humpback whales, travel to the warm, shallow waters of Hawaiʻi to mate, give birth, and raise their young. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary was created to protect these whales and the habitats they rely on, with Mauis south shore playing a central role.

Located along South Kihei Road, the visitor center sits right at the waters edge with views of Kahoʻolawe, Lanaʻi, and West Maui. Exhibits and interactive displays share both scientific insights and Native Hawaiian perspectives, reflecting a management approach that honors culture along with conservation. From November through April, visitors often spot whales breaching or blowing offshore, even from the lawn.

The sanctuary is jointly managed by NOAA and the State of Hawaiʻi, and much of its work involves partnerships with local communities and cultural practitioners. For residents and visitors, a stop here is a chance to learn how to enjoy whale season with respect, including keeping proper distance and reporting any animals that appear entangled or in distress.

Ko‘ie‘ie Fishpond at Kalepolepo

Just offshore from Kalepolepo Park in Kīhei, a low stone wall arcs across the shallows. This is Ko‘ie‘ie Fishpond, one of the last remaining intact traditional fishponds along the South Maui coast and a remarkable example of early Hawaiian aquaculture.

Believed to have been built around the 1400s, Ko‘ie‘ie was maintained and repaired over the centuries by prominent chiefs and leaders, including ʻUmi a Līloa, Kekaulike, and Kamehameha I. The area later became known as Kalepolepo, a name tied to the clouds of dust raised when long lines of people carried stones to rebuild the pond.

Today, ʻAoʻao O Na Loko Iʻa O Maui, the Association of the Fishponds of Maui, leads ongoing restoration efforts. Volunteers, students, and community groups work stone by stone to repair sections of the wall using traditional methods. The pond serves as both a cultural site and a classroom, teaching visitors about food systems that once supported entire communities and the values of communal stewardship.

If you visit, move gently around the stones, respect any work in progress, and take a moment to imagine this shoreline when the pond was a central source of food for the aliʻi and their people.

Kamehameha I Lands In Kihei

Long before Kihei became a relaxed beach town with cafes, condos, and surf breaks, it was known as Kamaʻole, meaning “barren” in Hawaiian. The landscape and lifestyle looked very different. Fishermen and kiawe harvesters made their living along this arid shore, and in 1790 it became a turning point in Hawaiian history.

This coastline is recognized as the first landing place of Kamehameha I and his warriors on Maui. Here, he famously burned his canoes, forcing his army to advance inland toward Wailuku for the Battle of Kepaniwai, a pivotal conflict in his campaign to unite the islands under one rule.

Development did not arrive in earnest until the mid 1900s, with major growth in the 1970s. Today, Kihei is home to families, small businesses, schools, beaches, and a growing number of people who work remotely, drawn to the balance of everyday convenience and coastal living. Yet just steps from modern life, places like Ko‘ie‘ie Fishpond and the whale sanctuary visitor center remind us that Kihei sits on historically significant ground.

<img src=https://www.islandsothebysrealty.com/uploads/agent-105/2026 Blog Assets/Hidden South Maui: Cultural Landmarks That Shape the Coast/AdobeStock_102861782.jpeg alt= width=1092 height=728 />

Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge

Between Kihei and Maʻalaea, Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge stretches from mountain to sea, protecting one of Hawaiʻis most important remaining coastal wetlands. The name Kealia refers to a “salt encrusted place,” and the landscape shifts throughout the year as water levels rise and fall with the seasons.

The pond and surrounding wetlands provide critical habitat for endangered ae‘o, the Hawaiian stilt, and ʻalae keʻokeʻo, the Hawaiian coot, along with indigenous black crowned night herons and one of the largest populations of migratory shorebirds in the islands. The refuge also manages coastal strand habitat that supports native plant species, nesting seabirds, and both hawksbill and green sea turtles.

Historically, this area included an ancient fishpond and later served as an airstrip and military training ground. Today, the refuge offers a peaceful boardwalk and viewing areas where visitors can observe birds in relative quiet. It is an ideal place to slow down, listen to the wind and water, and remember that South Mauis story includes wetlands and wildlife, not only beaches and resorts.

ʻAhihi Kinaʻu Natural Area Reserve

At the far southwest corner of Maui, ʻAhihi Kinaʻu Natural Area Reserve feels like another world. The lava underfoot is some of the islands youngest, dating back a few hundred years to Haleakalas most recent eruptions. The reserve protects more than 1,200 acres of land and sea, including rare anchialine pools, pockets of native dryland plants, and a rich nearshore marine environment.

The bays shallow, clear waters and healthy coral reefs make it one of South Mauis best snorkeling spots, with reef fish and Hawaiian green sea turtles commonly seen. At the same time, this is not a typical beach park. ʻAhihi Kinaʻu is a reserve first and foremost, created to protect fragile ecosystems and cultural sites. There is no fishing, access is limited to designated areas and hours, and visitors are asked to stay on marked paths, avoid anchialine pools, and avoid touching or approaching wildlife.

<img src=https://www.islandsothebysrealty.com/uploads/agent-105/2026 Blog Assets/Hidden South Maui: Cultural Landmarks That Shape the Coast/AdobeStock_300553735.jpeg alt= width=1092 height=818 />

La Perouse Bay

La Perouse Bay, known in Hawaiian as Keoneʻoʻio, marks the end of the road in South Maui and the visible edge of Haleakalas last major lava flow. Drivers wind past sweeping fields of aʻa lava between mile markers 5.5 and 7 on Makena Alanui Road until the pavement ends at the bay.

This coastline is rich in both natural and cultural history. The lava fields conceal remnants of ancient fishing villages, heiau, salt pans, and anchialine pools, all set against a rugged shoreline where spinner dolphins, turtles, and reef fish are often seen offshore. The historic Hoapili Trail, which continues beyond the parking area, follows a traditional route along the coast over jagged stone, rewarding prepared hikers with wide open views and a strong sense of place.

La Perouse is a powerful reminder that South Maui is still very much a volcanic landscape. It is also a place where visitors are encouraged to tread lightly, stay on the established trail, carry plenty of water, and remember that the ruins and cultural sites they pass are part of living Hawaiian heritage.

Whether you are a longtime resident, new homeowner, or visitor considering South Maui as a future home, these landmarks invite a different way of seeing this shoreline. As you explore, travel thoughtfully. Keep distance from wildlife, stay on marked trails, respect restoration projects, and take the time to learn about the histories connected to each place. In doing so, you help ensure that South Maui remains not only a beautiful place to live and work, but also a place where its stories and landscapes are honored for generations to come.
