In need of a break from the city, traffic and tourists?

Hidden far away from the crowds and hotels, Maui offers several picturesque small towns that are packed with personality and charm - truly the best of country living. From the rolling pasturelands to quiet streets to mom-and-pop shops that have served communities for decades, Maui’s rural communities make you feel like you’re going back in time.

From ranch houses to luxury cottages tucked away from the hustle and bustle, these are a few of our favorite escapes in rural Maui.

39606 Hana Highway | Hana

Oceanfront and bordered on both sides by streams and waterfalls, this plantation-style home is the perfect retreat. Offered for $2.249 million, this two-bedroom home is completely off-grid, with a private well and photovoltaic system in place. It’s nestled on more than 3 acres, zoned for conservation and agriculture.

Maui’s eastern coast is one of the state’s last untouched paradises. On all of Maui, Kipahulu is one of the last communities where you can truly live oceanfront without having a neighbor in sight.

475 Manawai Place | Haiku

Get away from it all and take in the natural beauty at this tropical escape, offered for $1,999,000. With terraced and retained platforms ready to be built on, the possibilities are endless. But one thing is certain: This 5-acre property in lush Haiku lends itself to be one of the finest, most private retreats on the Maui.

Currently, a 1,000-square-foot residence is situated in the heart of the property, which features one bedroom and one and a half bathrooms. A massive Ipe deck, stucco siding, plastered interior walls and interior wood floors are some of the fine design elements incorporated into the luxurious residence.

17526 Haleakala Highway | Kula

Full of country charm, this three-bedroom home is nestled in the heart of Upcountry Maui. Located on the slopes of Haleakala, this home offers peace and quiet, with the exception of the sounds of birds chirping and the wind rustling through the trees. With panoramic bicoastal views, this cozy home is equipped with a wet bar and cabinet, wood-burning stove and wrap-around deck made of glass panels to keep the view clear and unobstructed.

Out in the large backyard, explore magical gardens and stroll down paths that lead through indigenous plants and mature trees. This property offers the best of rural living on Maui.
