It may come to no surprise to many people that Hawai’i is often ranked among the healthiest — and happiest — states in the entire country.

With miles of white sand beaches to run on and dozens of places to find fresh local produce, there are countless ways for people to stay healthy on islands like Maui — all while enjoying the pristine natural environment that the island has to offer. The Aloha State also boasts one of the highest life expectancy rates in the entire nation, as well as a lower obesity rate compared to other states.

But why does living on Maui or other Hawaiian Islands help citizens become healthier? We’ve got some ideas about why you might benefit from moving to the Aloha State.

Food

From fresh ahi tuna to succulent fruits and veggies, Maui offers an abundance of local foods that are loaded with nutrients and vitamins. The island’s tropical climate means succulent fruits and veggies can be grown year round, which are often sold at farmers markets across the island.

There’s also fresh fish, and other types of proteins like grass-fed cattle that come from the island — not to mention macadamia nuts and all sorts of other legumes and nuts. When living on Maui, it’s easy to pick out foods that are delicious, nutritious, unprocessed and grown organically.

Sunlight

If there’s one thing Maui is famous for, it’s sunshine all year round. Average daily temperatures usually range from 70 to 85 degrees depending on the season, which means it’s almost always a great day to go outside.

Besides providing a healthy dose of Vitamin D, sunlight can also help improve your sleep by helping your body regulate its biological clock, known as circadian rhythms. Sunlight can also help improve your mood because it  promotes the production of feel-good chemicals in your brain, which help you feel happy and relaxed.

Exercise

With sunlight and warm weather almost everyday of the year, Maui offers a perfect environment of outdoor exercise. From mountain biking to swimming to surfing, there are countless ways to enjoy the best of Maui’s natural wonders, all while getting a work out in. With innumerable hiking trails, miles of white, sandy beaches to run on and the warm Pacific Ocean to swim in, it’s no secret why the Aloha State is one of the healthiest in the country.
