HENRY KAPONO FEATURING KEOLA BEAMER AND MOANALANI BEAMER

Mar 11, 2023, 7:30 PM, Maui Arts and Cultural Center

Maui Arts & Cultural Center presents Artist 2 Artist series, the Hawaii Legends Edition, hosted by the acclaimed Henry Kapono. As a multiple award-winning and GRAMMY® nominee, Henry Kapono will take the stage with some of Hawaii's most iconic and diverse musical talents. Through intimate conversations and jam sessions, Henry will provide the audience with a glimpse into the spirit and aspirations of each artist. Henry Kapono, a Native Hawaiian artist, rose to fame as half of the duo Cecilio & Kapono (C&K), which helped shape the sound of contemporary Island music in the 1970s. With his laid-back rock music that reflected the emotions of an entire generation in Hawai‛i, Henry has earned numerous accolades, including 20 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and a Grammy nomination. In 2021, he was honored with two awards: Best Contemporary Album of the Year (peer-voted) and Favorite Entertainer of the Year (public-voted).

‘IKE KANAKA

Running now through March 18, 2023, Schaefer International Gallery (MACC)

The Schaefer International Gallery at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center is proud to present ‘Ike Kanaka, an exclusive exhibition showcasing the latest creations of ten Kanaka ʻŌiwi artists hailing from both Hawai‘i nei pae ʻāina and the continental U.S. ‘Ike Kanaka captures the essence of ʻōiwi perspectives, experiences, and wisdom that is rooted in the past, but communicated in the present to inspire a brighter future.

“Our planning for this exhibition began in 2019, with many in-depth discussions about Indigenous ideas and the cultural issues Hawaiians are facing today. We talked about generational learning in a time of hulihia (disruptive change or chaos) and the importance of passing down essential stories and ancestral history to honor and sustain identity into the future”, says Gallery Director Neida Bangerter.

Participating artists are: Bernice Akamine, Kalaʻiakea M. Blakemore, Hoaka Delos Reyes, Solomon Enos, Pōhaku Kaho‘ohanohano, Lehuauakea, Kawika Lum-Nelmida, Meleanna Aluli Meyer, Aulii Mitchell, and Cory Kamehanaokalā Holt Taum. The exhibit opens Tuesday, January 17 and runs through March 18. Hours are 10am – 4pm Tuesday through Saturday and admission is free. See more at mauiarts.org.
