It's no secret that Hawaii has some of the best whale watching in the world. For centuries, whales have been migrating to the Maui channels because of the warm and shallow waters that keep their young safe. It's estimated that more than half of the humpback whale population migrates to Maui for breeding every winter. The waters between Maui, Lanai, and Kahoolawe are also protected sanctuaries for these seasonal visitors. While keeping the population of humpback whales safeguarded is of the utmost importance, we all know that nothing is better than marveling as they flip and breach along the Hawaiian coastline!

Here are the best ways to whale watch that don't require booking a tour!

Jake Shimabukuro at the Maui Arts and Culture Center

With special guest PURE HEART, Saturday, January 21st, 2023, at 7:30 PM at the Castle Theater.

"Over the past two decades, Jake Shimabukuro has proved that there isn't a style of music that he can't play. While versatility for any musician is impressive, what's remarkable about Jake's transcendent skills is how he explores his seemingly limitless vocabulary – whether it's jazz, rock, blues, bluegrass, folk, or even classical – on perhaps the unlikeliest of instruments: the 'ukulele. Responding to the urgent calls of his fervent imagination, Jake has taken the 'ukulele to points previously thought impossible, and in the process, he's reinvented the applications for this tiny, heretofore

  1. Kianna Hawai’i’s Pakalana Lei

For my Christmas wish, I would have to say that I am dying to have this lei necklace made by Kianna Hawaii. It's something I would wear to work and parties in 2023!  In fact, I'll put the Papale Piko Kona lauhala hat on my list as well (see in the photo above) since it goes so well with the lei. I am just amazed at all her pieces because a part of me wishes we could go back in time to wear traditional Hawaiin clothes like mu'u mu'us again (especially to work)!  I would also put the stunning Holoholo Surf’s Hanohano Muu in Retro Ilima on my

Tell us about your history with Pickleball and how you became passionate about it.

Mino: I trained as a tennis player — playing 20 years of competitive tennis, but was sidelined during covid with an injury. Pickleball was a way to remain competitive and social without as much pain. I have grown to love it so much so, that I rarely play tennis now. I enjoy it because it's fast-paced, a new challenge, and a super fun community of players who are all equally addicted. On any given day, you can find a match on this island.

Ryan: My history with Pickleball was born out of Covid! It was a sport that everyone got into with the lockdown. In Hawaii especially, there was nothing to do other than surf, so it was a great outlet, and all of my friends
