Autumn is a beautiful time to visit Maui, but there’s no doubt the island is lacking in some of the season’s conventional activities.

You won’t find red, orange or yellow trees to sweep up, or even really need to put on a sweater, for that matter. But there is one fall tradition that you’ll find on Maui that rivals anything on the mainland — the pumpkin patch at Kula Country Farms.

Nestled on the slopes of Haleakala, Kula Country Farms is a fourth generation farm that sells some of the island’s freshest produce  — it’s best known for its strawberries, sweet Kula Onions, and sweet Kula corn. But during the fall, the farm is most famous for its pumpkin patch, which has become one of Maui’s most popular autumn activities.

Pet owners who want to bring their furry friends to Hawai’i from the mainland can rejoice — the state’s quarantine process just got a lot quicker.

Hawai’i is the only rabies-free state in the country, largely because the state has carefully managed animals traveling to and from the islands with strict quarantine laws that have been in effect for decades. But now, pet owners who go through an expedited process, known as the 5 Day or Less Rabies Quarantine Program, can get their pets to the islands even quicker than before. With that process, pets don’t have to be quarantined when they arrive at the airport.

Under the old rules, even the pets that had vaccinations and underwent special blood testing could be required to wait months before coming

Imagine what is once was like to bake bread and churn butter without the modern wonder of electricity.

Island Sotheby’s International Realty agent Ricardo Ralha, R(S) knows exactly what that’s like. Ralha was recently part of an event held by the Portuguese Association of Maui, which sought to teach Maui’s keiki the traditional way of baking bread and churning butter without electricity.

The event, however, was about more than just teaching the historical techniques of baking bread in a stone oven. Instead, Ralha and the other members were using the activity as a way to preserve and celebrate the history of Portuguese people in Hawai’i.
